Tomatillos are technically a fruit. They have a sharp acidity, and a flavour reminiscent of unripe green tomatoes.
When making Mexican salsa verde, tomatillos are the main element, typically cooked, then mixed with chopped onion, coriander, jalapeno peppers and lime juice.
