Organic jackfruit, or jakfruit, in water is a gluten and soy free alternative to meat. Jackfruit are in the fig, mulberry and breadfruit family, and are widely cultivated in tropical regions.
Young jackfruit has a very mild flavour, but a meaty texture similar to pulled pork when cooked. To use, drain and rinse the jackfruit pieces. Then tear apart and pan fry, or cook directly in a sauce.
Use cooked jackfruit as a vegan and vegetarian alternative to pulled pork in burgers and tacos. Add to a bolognese sauce for pasta or use to make a ‘chicken’ salad. In many Asian countries, they use unripe jackfruit in curries.
These jackfruit are grown in Sri Lanka, then picked and canned before they ripen. Jackfruit are a good source of fibre, vitamins A & C, potassium, iron and zinc.
