Romney’s Kendal mint cake is an iconic piece of confectionery from the Lake District, and known as the original energy bar. It is famed for being carried on the first successful summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Made with only four ingredients: sugar, glucose, water and peppermint oil, this ‘cake’ is similar in texture to fudge, with a slightly grainy texture.
To make the mint cake, the sugar, glucose and water are mixed together and boiled to 115 degrees Celsius, then poured into copper pans. Peppermint oil is added, then a secret ‘grinding’ process takes place to produce the hard set. With its very high sugar content, this mint cake is great for taking on hikes to produce an energy boost.
Romney’s have been making Kendal Mint Cake since 1918, and still to this day each cake is made in Kendal by a small team of 16.
