Chia seeds are mottle-grey in colour and have a distinctive crunchy texture. Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which is even reflected in their etymology – “chia” is derived from the Nahuatl word chian, meaning ‘oily’. Native to central, southern Mexico and Guatemala chia, or Salvia hispanica, was an important crop in the Aztec empire.
